My name used to be Jake and I changed it to something else for a lot of reasons I won't explain here.

I am kinda glad I did because everyone makes the "Jake from State Farm" reference about every 20 seconds for the rest of your life when your name is Jake, I currently live in LA near Palisades, and now everyone despises State Farm.

Quite glad to not have that attached to my name anymore honestly.

"This dangerous #fire residue contaminated nearly everything in the Hussey’s packed, three-bedroom house: the insulation, carpets, clothing, furniture, even down to the old, chipped drawers in their kitchen, according to two independent experts, who also said it would take weeks of meticulous work to make this space safe again, at a cost of up to $80,000.

#StateFarm, the Hussey’s insurer... disagrees"

Despite their stupid gecko nonsense, #Geico #insurance recently reported a huge jump in quarterly profit on higher premiums.

When asked, insurers *say* it's because of too many claims, but this is not reflected in their earnings reports nor balance sheets. Since 2021, most are even reporting LOWER customer claims. The other big auto insurers, like #Allstate, #AmericanFamily, #StateFarm and #Progressive, have been pulling the same nonsense while making record profits.

Even if #millenials can afford to buy a house, the fact that the big #insurance companies -- at least in #California -- aren't writing homeowner policies make such an investment really risky. I wish this #WashingtonPost article had mentioned these 2 things: 1) the fact that #StateFarm, #AllState, #Farmers, and #USAA are "putting a pause on these policies" (words used by agent) because of 2) #ClimateChange.

400M Records Stolen in 2023 State Farm Data Breach, Class Action Lawsuit Says

State Farm faces a proposed class action lawsuit after 400 million records were reportedly accessed and stolen by hackers during an August 2023 data breach.

The 33-page lawsuit alleges State Farm lacked adequate systems and procedures to properly safeguard consumers’ highly sensitive personal data, allowing hackers to use ransomware to steal roughly 400 million records from the insurer’s systems around August 28 of this year. The filing contends that the incident could have been prevented had State Farm properly vetted and monitored its systems.

#ClimateDenialism gets more absurd every day. Fossil fuel companies have long had a financial interest in downplaying climate change, but the companies who have to insure against climate catastrophes are under no illusions because the crisis is hitting them right in the wallet”

Guardian article on #StateFarm #insurance in #California (although, IMHO, the author very incorrectly ties the housing crisis into the #wildfire issues here... the wildland-urban interface is not cheaper to live in, and it's not cheap housing at risk due to wildfires) theguardian.com/commentisfree/

The GuardianClimate risks have made California uninsurable. When will we wake up?By Kate Aronoff

Anyone know why #StateFarm & now #Allstate pulled out of the #CA home #insurance market entirely, instead of just jacking up premiums on the highest-risk policies?

A 4-BR in The Sunset or a high-rise in downtown LA don't have *zero* #climate exposure, but it's nowhere near what an exburban mcmansion or rural farmhouse would have, right?

Is there something about #california that means they're exposed regardless? The state-run FAIR plan mentioned at the end here? #capol
