This is a bad decision. And this is ridiculous: “Executives at Meta made the decision based on free-speech considerations after weighing past U.S. elections in which the results might have been contested by a portion of the electorate, according to people familiar with the issue.” Ads are paid political speech. If they do this, they are profiting from the Big Lie.

WSJWSJ News Exclusive | Meta Allows Ads Claiming Rigged 2020 Election on Facebook, InstagramCompany weighed free-speech considerations in changing its policy last year

@Noupside Past US elections that were contested? Is the election of 1876 really still a hot topic? Are there Samuel Tilden fans who are still disappointed?

@Noupside Bad for the country, but good for Meta's bottom line. Outrage breeds engagement and all that.

@Noupside I wish I knew more about the legal risk here as well. I thought ads, and especially political ads, were more heavily regulated than content in posts and that Facebook would not be as well protected by Section 230 by allowing ads that contain outright lies. Is that not the case? To me, it seems like Facebook execs once again are badly underestimating legal and regulatory risks, but I'd love to know more from someone better informed on the legal issues than me.

@Noupside I don't know how they made their decision, but **legally** there is nothing compelling them to allow ads that peddle the Big Lie.

I feel the need to say this because of their claim "free-speech considerations."

They also have a right of association (which entails a right of disassociation) but they are not using this right.

Or maybe they do want to be associated with the Big Lie. 🤷

@Noupside I work for a nonprofit that advocates for people with disabilities. Our communications person tried to buy an ad for one of our awareness campaigns, and it was declined for being political. They don't give a fuck about free speech. They give a fuck about the right winning.
