I love this description of Envy in Stephanie McCarter‘s wonderful translation of Ovid’s “Metamorphoses”
“She does not smile unless she’s witnessed pain“
The translation is a banger; it foregrounds something that scholars have for centuries mostly danced around, which is that the “Metamorphoses” is basically a massive poem about sexual assault
@clive love this
Right?
@clive Boy, yeah. I was reading "Latin Via Ovid" for a class a couple of years ago and that entire Latin reader sure has a lot of sexual assault. I appreciate the desire to get close to an original text, but I would have chosen another textbook.
yeah, understood
